Saint Sebastian Academy is a private, independent hybrid high school for young men and women in the Catholic tradition. We are located in Sterling, Virginia with classes held at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church.
At the heart of SSA’s educational philosophy is the belief that we are spiritual beings with a heavenly goal, and our education should reflect and encourage participation in this reality.
The leadership of Saint Sebastian Academy recognizes that the wisdom found in the classical, liberal arts approach provides the ideal platform to encourage spiritual and intellectual growth grounded in the Good, the True and the Beautiful.
Saint Sebastian Academy offers a 3-day a week program on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Core high school classes are condensed primarily into Wednesday and Friday classes, while Mondays are reserved primarily for electives.
The Hybrid model allows families to take advantage of the best components of two educational models – traditional and homeschooling. Flexibility is at the heart of the model.
Families may enroll children either as full time students, or take classes on an a la carte basis through our Homeschool Enrichment Program (HEP). All high school classes and electives are open to HEP participants. In addition, HEP students can participate in SSA extracurriculars and athletics at a club level.
Saint Sebastian’s curriculum is based on the classical liberal arts. We offer core classes in the following disciplines:
Electives will be offered in complementary areas of discipline.
Next to parents, teachers play the most important role in the formation of our children. While subject matter knowledge and teaching skills are a required minimum, SSA teachers also understand the role of example and educator.
SSA will strive to identify and contract with teachers who demonstrate the capacity for teacher and educator in the Christian life. All teachers will be required to be active Catholics and to take an annual oath of fidelity to the Magisterium of the Catholic Church.
Beautiful indeed and of great importance is the vocation of all those who aid parents in fulfilling their duties and who, as representatives of the human community, undertake the task of education in schools. This vocation demands special qualities of mind and heart, very careful preparation, and continuing readiness to renew and to adapt.
The more completely an educator can give concrete witness to the model of the ideal person that is being presented to the students, the more this ideal will be believed and imitated. For it will then be seen as something reasonable and worthy of being lived, something concrete and realizable. It is in this context that the faith witness of the lay teacher becomes especially important.
